If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away.

Second semester of my freshman year, I was fortunate to follow a whim that placed me in an English course with Sister Mara Faulkner. I had heard wonderful things about her, and was excited for what I’d learn. Among the many wonderful moments in her class that semester, I most enjoyed studying poets…some more contemporary than I’d expected.
One of our class favorites, Adrienne Rich, passed away yesterday.
Her poetry was some of the most raw, historical, transcendent, real poetry I’ve read. It even inspired me in my own. As a feminist, Rich promoted the strength of women, but was realistic about society and the struggles of making a way into it when everything was against the odds. I leave you with one of her poems that’s stuck with me.
Final Notations
Adrienne Rich
it will not be simple, it will not be long
it will take little time, it will take all your thought
it will take all your heart, it will take all your breath
it will be short, it will not be simple
it will touch through your ribs, it will take all your heart
it will not be long, it will occupy your thought
as a city is occupied, as a bed is occupied
it will take all your flesh, it will not be simple
You are coming into us who cannot withstand you
you are coming into us who never wanted to withstand you
you are taking parts of us into places never planned
you are going far away with pieces of our lives
it will be short, it will take all your breath
it will not be simple, it will become your will

Now I’m not a fan of rule-breaking, but when there are some serious human rights violations going on, I can’t help but be refreshed by anyone’s ability to stand up for the voiceless. And hey, if you’re a celebrity and everyone is watching, more power to you. Thanks, George Clooney for being a voice of reason and an example for the afraid.

After every foolish day we sleep off the fumes and furies of its hours; and though we are always engaged with particulars, and often enslaved to them, we bring with us to every experiment the innate universal laws. These, while they exist in the mind as ideas, stand around us in nature forever embodied, a present sanity to expose and cure the insanity of men. Our servitude to particulars betrays into a hundred foolish expectations. We anticipate a new era from the invention of a locomotive, or a balloon; the new engine brings with it the old checks. They say that by electro–magnetism, your sallad shall be grown from the seed, whilst your fowl is roasting for dinner: it is a symbol of our modern aims and endeavors,—–of our condensation and acceleration of objects: but nothing is gained: nature cannot be cheated: man’s life is but seventy sallads long, grow they swift or grow they slow.
